“Elena Rose Photography did professional head shots for me and I consistently get complimented. Folks have told me that these are some of the best head shots they have ever seen, period. The session was a joy–and I’m not somebody who enjoys having their picture taken. Elena Rose was warm, creative, personable, all that good stuff, but most importantly, her work is simply the best.”   Nicole Z.

What makes a great headshot?  Here are some points of interest:

Define Your Professional Image – Know Thyself (And Your Profession!)

Let your headshot reflect your individuality as well as the character of your industry.  For example, if you are a professional golfer, you don’t want to be mistaken for a mortgage broker.  Be sure you are clear on the message you want your headshot to communicate.  You can do this by dressing in a manner appropriate to the image you want to portray.

Timeliness – Time DOES Fly!

If you want your headshot to last indefinitely, choose clothing with solid colors or simple, classic patterns such as a thin pinstripe or a fine Glen plaid.  Trendy patterns, necklines, lapels and shoulder styles will shorten the shelf life of your headshot   As for jewelry, if you have a signature piece of jewelry, do wear it; otherwise keep your jewelry simple. Overall, think timeless, think classic, think simple.  EXCEPTION: if you regularly update your headshot, then by all means go vogue.  This choice between a classic style headshot and a contemporary style headshot also applies to the orientation and cropping of your headshot.  I can show you different ways to make your picture look one contemporary or classic.  Many clients choose one of each.

Your Expression – What You Portray Is What You Attract

Think happy thoughts. Seriously. The simplest way to attain a natural, engaging expression is to imagine something that makes you happy.  (True story: I once photographed a judge who presided over murder trials.  As you can imagine, the man had a serious countenance and, predictably, didn’t like any of the test shots I produced.  I encouraged him to think of something light hearted.  When he did so, his face relaxed and he looked, well…, more human.  I asked if he was thinking about his grandchildren or his pet and he said, “Hell, no!  I was thinking of my airplane!”  Hey, whatever works…)

Easy Access To Your Headshot – Another Reason To Hire A Professional

Professional photographers always have backups of their clients’ files and photos.  I keep a copy on my main hard drive and on my external hard drive. Although my headshot packages include digital files on CD for you, sometimes a client will lose or break the CD.  Don’t worry. Give me a call and I’ll send you a copy.  I keep excellent records and can easily locate any client’s file, even if there’s a short deadline.

Where Will Your Business Headshot Be Seen? – Matching the Headshot With The Context

Business cards, flyers, brochures, PDF’s, newsletters, blogs and networking websites are among the most common uses for a business headshot.  Because any of these vehicles can have a different template, I photograph my clients in natural light with a blurry, abstract-looking background, or in the studio against a ‘graduated’ grey background.  Either setting will provide a context for your headshot, so you don’t appear to be ‘floating’ on the PDF, business card, masthead, etc.

Another consideration is the shape of the headshot.  I provide you with standard rectangle as well as with the increasingly more common square format so you will have what you need no matter what.

To Retouch or Not To Retouch – Less Is More

I like to edit out temporary distractions such as a shaving cut or a blemish, but I save the soft focus and airbrushed filters for my glamour photography.  A business headshot should be realistic; optimized, yes; but realistic.  The last thing you want is for someone NOT to recognize you because your appearance is so different from your picture.

Please take a minute to browse the samples of my work and to check out my business headshot prices.  I also have special packages for social media profiles such as Facebook or Match.com.  No matter how you want to use your headshot, I can provide the setting, the technical expertise, the styling and the guidance to create a headshot that you will be proud to publish.
