Headshots for Your Dating Profile and Social Media

It takes gumption to date, seek romance, and put yourself out there under Cupid’s wing.  Where to begin?  After you have investigated some decent online dating websites, compose a few paragraphs telling prospective dates something about yourself.  Not too much… yes, you want to attract attention, but leave topics open for conversation.

Next upload some photos.

I suggest a nice headshot, a three-quarter pose and a full body pose.  Right now, I can hear some of you shuddering at the thought of recent photos.  RELAX!   Be yourself. (After all, no one else is better qualified!)  So what if you’re not a super model?  It doesn’t matter.  What does matter is to look your best, smile and find your inner confidence.  You know… the confidence that comes from doing something you are really good at doing.  (Driving, cooking, soccer, crocheting, running a meeting, etc.)  We are all good at something, so find the thing that puts your inner confidence in high gear, access that feeling, and get some nice pictures taken to put on your dating site profile.

Then, after you get your friend with the iPhone to take your picture, and you can’t understand why it just isn’t working, please call me.  There’s a reason professional photographers are called professionals.  Acquiring photos for dating sites is not just about having a camera.  There’s technical skill involved, but also an art and a fair amount of psychology.

QUESTION: To edit or not to edit?  Let’s explore that.  For example:

-Do you have a blemish that decided to erupt the morning of your appointment?  Then, yes, let’s edit that out of the photos.

-Are you 20 pounds heavier than you’d like to be?  Then, let’s not edit that out.  You won’t a get a second date by starting off with a lie.  In fact, your first date will probably be cut short.  So be yourself.

-Are you a blonde, but your brunette roots are showing a little?  Yes, I can retouch that, although it’s really better for you to get your hair done before the photo session.

-Are you 40 and you want to look 20?  Online dating photos are not the vehicle for fabricated glamorous touches.  Do look as best you can, but show your age proudly.  It’s really not appropriate to Photoshop away all the years since high school.  After all, how would you like it if your dates showed up looking twenty years older than their photos?

Concentrate on attracting the person who is attracted to you.  Don’t waste your time, energy and money trying to attract someone who is attracted to someone else.  Even in Portland, there’s only so much coffee/beer/wine you can drink.  So don’t waste your time on the wrong person.

QUESTION: Where should your dating site photos be taken?

My first choice is an outdoor setting, but if the weather is nasty, let’s go indoors.  Your place might work well, or a studio setting, or (don’t laugh) a mall.  The idea is to be relaxed and happy.  If you’re freezing and the wind is gusting and the slight shower is turning into a hailstorm, no surprise your photos will be less than stellar.  So let’s plan accordingly with a first choice plan and a back up plan.  I’ve taken many online dating photos in my clients’ homes.  If you have a good looking abode and want to show it off, let’s go there.

QUESTION: Who else should be in the photos?

If you have kids, include one or two photos taken with the offspring.  If you have pets, let’s work them in, too.  Remember, you want to attract someone who will be comfortable with your lifestyle and who will support you in your responsibilities.  No sense dating someone who doesn’t like children or pets.

QUESTION: What about props?

If you like to play sports, bring the clubs or the mitt.  Are you a musician?  No harm in having the cello, tuba, guitar, flute, etc. included.  You might attract a fellow musician, or at least a music lover.  Are you an artist or a chess player?  Let’s work that into the photos.  It’s good to show your interests, and others with similar interests will be attracted to your pictures.

Last and most important – be yourself. No matter your age, wear it proudly; same goes for height, weight, ethnicity, hair, thinning hair, lots of hair or no hair. The greatest turn-ons for any healthy individual are confidence, humility and a sense of humor.  Especially confidence: the confidence to be yourself.
